For those interested, I wanted to gather the four adaptations I have located on YT. These are unofficial uploads, and I haven't watched all of them yet (I am waiting to reach the second generation in my reading before I start digging into any of the adaptations), but I did skim through to make sure picture and sound quality seemed reasonable.

1958

A TV movie made for DuPont Show of the Month on CBS, starring Richard Burton and Rosemary Harris, directed by Daniel Petrie. This one I have seen! It very much takes inspiration from the William Wyler film, only adapting the first half of the story. Considered lost until 2019.

1967

A BBC miniseries, starring Ian McShane and Angela Scoular, directed by Peter Sasdy. Broadcast in color and a victim of the BBC's mania for wiping master tapes, it is now only available in a B&W copy which escaped destruction. Contains the second generation.

1970

Made by the British branch of American International Pictures, this film stars Timothy Dalton and Anna Calder-Marshall, and is directed by Robert Fuest. It (again) only adapts the first generation, and apparently took notable liberties beyond that.

A television film for ITV starring Robert Cavanah and Orla Brady, directed by David Skynner. This one includes the second generation.

Pre 2026 because it will take us a while, presumably, to see the new movie. Also the others were long ago enough that it's easier to judge then. Now, there were many, many WH adaptations - you can see
a list of all WH adaptations so far here and the ones I picked for the poll are simply by the criteria of me actually having watched them. Given the sheer number of adaptations, I bet none of us have seen all, and several of you may have watched far more than I, hence the last option in each poll. Also, if anyone has seen the BBC 1967 one starring a young Ian McShane as Heathcliff, I am so envious because that sounds like genius casting. Now, on to the options:

(I do believe most of us are on our 3 millionth read of Wuthering Heights, so I will apologize if one of us is reading for the first time ...) Is Wuthering Heights a LOVE STORY??? Is it "the greatest love story of all time"?

What is the difference between love and obsession? Betrayal of others and betrayal of self? How can love give birth to the monster of revenge. How do feelings of love turn bitter, spoil and become something dark and hateful?

Victim, victim, victim of the whims of the heart. Does anyone triumph?

It’s a month till Boston comes to Montreal and Rozanov’s promise of ‘next time’ could go into fulfilment. Shane Hollander wants to play hockey. He wants to play it well. The other thing is a thing he cannot allow himself to want.

bleodswean today. Discussion of the childhood and adolescence of Catherine and Heathcliff! A lot happens in these chapters!

How does the tone shift as we switch from Lockwood to Mrs. Dean as narrator? What impression does she make? What makes her an unreliable witness?

We're introduced to the Lintons and the world outside Wuthering Heights. What significance do they have?

Hindley's deterioration is chilling. Heathcliff desires vengeance and Catherine wishes to escape. Nelly disapproves of both plans. Is she right or wrong?

Does Catherine retain our sympathy as she grows up? Does Heathcliff? Why or why not?

Chapter Nine is pivotal, containing Catherine's famous speech. Discuss!
